What to Do When You are Back On Track

After much writing about how to get your life back on track, I thought I would write about what to do once you are back on track. Here are a few suggestions on what to do to stay on that awesome path you are on.

1. Keep a Journal

Yep, I said it. Keep a journal. No, I’m not suggesting that you write down your thoughts and feelings every night before you go to bed, unless you think that will work for you. But for others, keeping little notes either on your phone or a pad of paper with all of your good thoughts will keep you on track. When you get into a little funk, you can quickly go back to your words of wisdom and remind yourself how far you’ve come and how good you feel.

2. Don’t Strive for Perfection

Once we start to feel good, we do everything we can not to go back. Who wants to feel gross again?! Not me. So what do we do instead? We overcompensate. We make sure everything is perfect. We do what we call in psychology world, All or Nothing Thinking. It either has to be this way or that and there is no gray in between. Stop doing that. You don’t have to do everything perfect to continue to feel good. Life is a journey. There are ups and downs. It is how you move through the journey that will make or break you.

3. Stay Calm

Finally, I would suggest to always be in the mindset of staying calm. If you start to feel overwhelmed or pressured, stop and smell the roses. The beauty in feeling stressed is that it is an immediate notice to your brain and body that you need to stop. Yes, stop. It might take everything you have to slow down. Stop making the excuses why you need to keep going at the pace you are currently at. It is okay to stop. If you are afraid of letting someone down, don’t. Like I’ve mentioned in practically every blog, establish healthy boundaries. Everyone will thank you in the long run.

My Take Away….

For some of us, we work really hard at getting back to homeostasis but we don’t know what to do once we get there. I suggest you keep a journal, don’t strive for perfection and stay calm. Stop putting expectations on yourself and coming up with excuses. If you think you are going to let others down, don’t. Everything is okay and if people can’t fit into that world with you, move on.

Let’s keep the conversation going. How do you stay on the up and up?
