If you are like me and living in a cold climate, seeing the sun in the middle of winter is a miracle. For the most part, we wake up to a pitch black sky, go throughout the day with a grey sky (with all the lights still turned on), and end our day with a pitch black sky by 4pm. Yikes!!! Who would want to live in that???? I don’t know what I was thinking. So the question is, how can we feel good during these cold, dark, wintery months?
Take Action Don’t go day after day struggling in this weather. Take action. Now, I am not a medical practitioner so don’t take my advice without first speaking to your doctor (thought I should probably throw that in there). However, I take action when I feel down. Sometimes I think I make it worse on myself when I don’t do things to change my circumstances. For me, I went to the doctor and found out I was low on vitamin D and vitamin B. So now I take those vitamins everyday and they work wonders! I also try to get out of the house at least once a day, no matter how cold it is. There’s something about fresh air that really helps me. Journal Take some time and journal about how things are going in your life. Get out a piece of paper or your computer and just write. Who cares if you don’t know how to spell words or make complete sentences. This exercise is about getting out all of your frustrations and negative emotions. When you’re done writing, throw out the piece of paper. I try not to hang on to them because I always feel like I’m hanging on to negative. I certainly don’t want that in my life. Be around others I could be wrong, but most people are struggling with these dark, grey months because they feel alone. Spending some time with other people releases endorphins – the happy chemicals sent throughout your body. It makes you feel really good. Don’t stay cooped up in your house for days and days. Make a plan to go out in the cold. You’ll feel better. My Take Away… These gross, grey winter months can be discouraging. When the sun comes out, all you want to do is be outside and sunbathe in your bathing suit. I would not recommend sunbathing seeing as it is frigid outside. What I would recommend is taking action, doing something. You could also write in your journal to get out all of those negative feelings and thoughts. And finally, be around others. Don’t stay stuck in your house for days at a time. Let’s keep the conversation going. Please leave your comment on how you stay healthy during these winter months.
